New York’s Plan to Defend Itself from Rising Seas

DACK’s Fresh Creek Project was featured on the News!

The world is experiencing some unique climate changes. Unfortunately, New York City is experiencing some major effects from some recent extreme weather, and it has been causing some major challenges from infrastructure issues to negative commuter experiences. When taking a closer look at New York City’s location, we can observe that its geography makes it particularly at risk to the impacts of climate change. New York State has begun building a mitigation and resiliency plan to protect its people from severe weather patterns.

The purpose of this plan will aid in maintaining, preventing and controlling the flow of any future high tide related damages caused by any hurricanes such as the devastation wreaked by Superstorm Sandy. The plan will help ensure that flood waters and runoff will enter the storm drainage systems properly.

DACK has been a major part of New York’s execution of the resiliency plan. DACK recently provided Construction Management, Estimating and Scheduling services at the Fresh Creek site in Brooklyn. This project was a GOSR funded stormwater mitigation project that consisted of replacing one outfall and installing five (5) new tide gates at five (5) different locations with a 6.5’ diameter storm drainage piping in Brooklyn. Given its close proximity to both swampland and neighborhood communities the following services were required for the successful implementation of the project: heavy staging, coordination and permitting with NYSDEC, SPDES permit, and SWPPP requirements, community outreach, lane closures and traffic rerouting, and more. This project was completed on-time and on-budget.
